However you use our glass it's essential that it is correctly specified and installed. The following comprises the six most common areas of risk, where it is recommended that safety glass to BS 6206 be installed.
Safety Glass Regulations cover what types of glass can be installed into windows, doors and other glazing locations. Here is our guide to help you understand where you must look to install the correct safety glass to your home or business.
To comply with the Building Regulations glazing requirements or also known as ‘Critical Locations’ there must be safety glass or safety guards in place to protect people from injury. The most likely locations for accidents caused by glass breakage, which could result in cutting and piercing injuries are in doors, door side panels, low windows and low level glass in walls and glass partitions.
Safety glass should be fitted in all doors and other windows or glazed areas that are lower than 800mm from the floor level.
Glass panels less than 250mm wide can be fitted with 6mm glass or laminated glass instead of toughened glass.
1. Glazed doors
In doors where the glass comes within 1500mm from floor level. [6mm ordinary (annealed) glass can be used in small panes. Small panes have one dimension less than 0.5m2.
2. Glazing adjacent to doors
In panes which are within 300mm from the door edge and 1500mm from floor level. [6mm ordinary (annealed) glass can be used in small panes.
3. Low level glazing
Glazing below 800mm from floor level. [6mm ordinary (annealed) glass can be used in small panes.]
4. Bathroom areas
Bath or shower screens, or whenever there is any risk of slipping on wet surfaces.
5. Protective barriers
Balconies and balustrades on stairways and landings.
6. Furniture and cabinets
Tables, trolleys, cabinets, shelving systems and wall hung or free standing mirrors.
